MANAGING THE IDENTITY IN COMMERCE AND PAYMENT: AN URGENT REVOLUTION

Strong customer authentication, generally understood as only a legal obligation for online payments, applicable as of the 14th of September 2019, is turning into a much-talked about yet elusive subject: when will it actually apply? How to solve the legal and technical challenges that it posed? Which place for the new payment initiation service providers? Which practical implication for the banks and PSPs? Which impact for the merchants?

Under such questions lies concealed the imminent arrival of a major transformation, issuing a strategical challenge for all the merchants and the financial intermediaries: the pending major launch and generalisation on the Web and all the devices, of standard solutions of identification of the customers, more secure and user friendly, will induce a radical change for trade and services, online or local, and customer relationship management!

In order to seize why and how this challenge matters, the 9th PIC conference gathered for you outstanding panellists, coming from six different countries. A selection of demos will offer you a preview of how identity management will change for commerce and payment on the user’s side, and what will be the implications on the technical or legal side.

Through the debates and the selection of innovation, discover what the Web, the GAFA and the devices manufacturers have prepared to handle the various challenges posed by identity management. Understand what will be the consequences of this new wave for all the merchants, online or brick and mortar. These new insights will be precious to build your short and medium-term strategy!

FIRST ROUNDTABLE: THE STAKES OF IDENTITY MANAGEMENT AND THEIR LEGAL, COMMERCIAL, SOCIAL, ETHICAL IMPLICATIONS

The European Commission, since many years, carries ambitious projects for which the practical implementation by the Member States implies a massive mobilisation of the economic players: public sector, banks, telecommunication and from now on players of the Web.

Who should manage identity? Who could access those data and how? What are the available technologies? How to avoid a major shift of the market shares in commerce and financial services induced by the understanding of security solutions?

The panellists will bring a European vision, simultaneously legal and practical, built from the experience of many Countries, including Estonia, which is at the forefront of the e-ID!

PANELISTS OF THE FIRST ROUNDTABLE:

  • ARNAUD DELAUNAY, CHIEF OF THE BANKING SERVICES AND MEANS OF PAYMENT DIVISION, DG OF THE FRENCH TREASURY

  • BOGDAN STEFAN, POLICY OFFICER, DG CONNECT, EUROPEAN COMMISSION

Identity management reveals multiple challenges: legal, regulatory, technical and ethical. Facing an accelerating schedule, how to reconcile obligations that seems contradictory? What are the transformation axes entertained by the European authorities? How the different Member States put them in application within a vast single market?

How to improve the trust in ID management services? In France, what will be the schedule? For the economic players, which are the impacts to anticipate considering security, responsibilities, conversion rate and default rate?

ROUNDTABLE 2: PRACTICAL SOLUTIONS: ANTICIPATING THE CURRENT EVOLUTIONS, CHOSING THE GOOD OPTIONS

From understanding to acting: what are the possible reaction measures and strategies to reconcile the multiple constraints?
What are the new solutions brought by the Web? What is Web Authentication? How this service is going to be a game changer for security, user experience and customer relations?

What is an “authenticator”? What is the potential of FIDO 2 and the new security tools? What are going to be the transformations of the customers and consumers uses and expectations? What are going to be the impacts for e-commerce and payment services?

  • KRIS DE RYCK, CEO OF BELGIAN MOBILE ID, ITSME®

How to prepare to strong customer authentication? How to reduce fraud costs, without reducing the conversion rates? How to protect data linked to purchases? What are the solution and architectures to put in place to foster interoperability? What are the consequences on customer relations?
